A founder of the conceptual art movement, Lawrence Weiner (1942-2021, United States) was a sculptor based in New York and Amsterdam. In an effort to make art that is accessible, open-ended, mutable, and transferable, Weiner's primary medium was language. From the 1970s onwards, he treated words as sculptural material through his installations, consisting solely of words in nondescript lettering painted on walls.
