Paul Maute (1897-1982, Germany) was a designer and weaver known for his handwoven designs. After studying weaving with a neighbor in his hometown of Heroldstatt, Germany, Maute set up his own firm in one of the town's old weaving schools that enlisted an all-in-one production process of spinning, dying, and handweaving. Maute specialized in high-quality handwoven upholstery and casement textiles, producing several designs for Knoll Textiles throughout the 1960s and '70s including Cato, a plain-woven construction that has remained a staple of the collection since its introduction in 1961. Although his last original design for Knoll was produced in 1977, his firm continued to manufacture existing designs for Knoll through the 1980s.
