Combining ancient analog processes with modern technology, Ikebana was originally conceived as a kinetic sculpture. By placing vivid transparencies of traditional ikebana flower arrangement on a mechanized light table, images continuously overlap, rendering the ikebana mutable.

Jon Kessler (b. 1957, United States) is a New York-based mixed-media artist. Best known for his kinetic sculptures that combine analog and digital technologies, Kessler explores post-utopian consumer societies and the tension between Eastern and Western cultures. He graduated from Purchase College, State University of New York, in 1980 and teaches at Columbia University (New York). He lives and works in Brooklyn.
